Social Class Students With Separate Resources For Meeting...

Jessica McCrory Calarco underwent a study to determine if different social class backgrounds equipped students with separate resources for meeting teachers’ expectations and if some students’ backgrounds offered more advantages. She also sought to discover if these differing class backgrounds led to students requesting help more or less often and if they did so through different strategies. Calarco observed elementary children and how they acted when they needed assistance from the teacher. Although some people may believe that children receive unequal opportunities from the school system, Calarco’s study indicates that children may be vital in providing opportunities for themselves. Calarco discusses how children’s roles in the schooling process are poorly studied and understood. Students are often seen as passive recipients of opportunities provided by parents and the school and prior literature has done very little to disprove this. However, Calarco sho ws that children also have a role in obtaining opportunities in the classroom. In addition, prior literature has not paid enough attention to how social classes have specifically created a cultural capital for students in order to gain advances in the classroom. Rather, prior literature focuses on other aspects. Calarco’s study helped clear any gaps in the study of children’s social stratification.
